What the National Weather Service wrote
A cluster of strong thunderstorms, fueled by MLCAPE values between 500-1000 J/KG, materialized across Gila County during the late afternoon and early evening hours on the 20th. With DCAPE values between 1000-1500 J/KG, a surging outflow boundary emanating from this thunderstorm complex descended into the lower elevations of south-central AZ, including the Phoenix metro area, producing widespread 35-55 mph peak gusts based on surface observations. These wind gusts were enough to result in minor damage across portions of the Phoenix metro, including some downed trees and powerlines. At Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, several cargo containers and a couple of airstairs causing minor engine damage to a couple of aircrafts were blown around by the strong winds.
